The upcoming winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly is set to prioritize the introduction of a key piece of legislation: the proposed bill to ban polygamy. This was confirmed by the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Dr. Numal Momin, who highlighted the bill’s critical importance in addressing the state’s population growth.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Momin firmly stated that the legislation is essential for tackling the swift and “explosive” increase in Assam’s population. He lent his full support to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, asserting that the Chief Minister is taking the “right step” by bringing forward this measure. Dr. Momin acknowledged that while the legislative move may have come late, he anticipates it will still have a significant positive impact on population control within the state.
The Deputy Speaker also took the opportunity to critique the governance of prior administrations, claiming that “Bharat was being destroyed by the Congress in the past,” and stressed that the current government is focused on rectifying those past errors. Expressing strong conviction in the public reception of the proposed law, he added, “I believe this bill will be accepted and welcomed by people across the country.” The winter session is anticipated to feature the tabling of several major bills, with the proposed polygamy ban bill expected to be among the most highly debated.
