Assam Woman Dies of Suspected Altitude Sickness Near Kedarnath Temple

Morigaon, May 7: A young woman from Assam’s Morigaon district died after reportedly suffering from altitude sickness during a pilgrimage to Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand.

The deceased has been identified as Papori Deka, a resident of Dalongghat, who had travelled to Kedarnath along with a group of friends for darshan.

According to family members, she fell ill while trekking towards the shrine and died on May 4, barely 500 metres from the temple premises.

Her body was brought back to her village on the morning of May 7, where scenes of grief unfolded as relatives, neighbours and well-wishers gathered to pay their last respects.

The incident drew further emotional attention after family members revealed that Papori Deka was scheduled to get married in December this year. In keeping with local customs, her would-be husband, Jyoti Prasad Datta of Guwahati, performed her last rites.

She is survived by her parents, Dulal Chandra Borah and Chandimai Borah.

Every year, thousands of pilgrims undertake the journey to Kedarnath during the Char Dham Yatra season. Authorities routinely advise visitors to remain cautious about high-altitude sickness and rapidly changing weather conditions in the Himalayan region.
