Guwahati: Assamese independent cinema marked a significant milestone as Yoodha – The Warrior, directed by Smriti Prakash Boruah, won the Best LGBTQ Feature Film Award at the Utsav International Film Festival (UIFF) 2025. The festival was held from December 11 to 14 at RDX Studio, Aram Nagar, Mumbai.
Produced by SPB Films in association with Sampreeti Welfare Society, the film was screened on the opening day of the festival and received an enthusiastic response from audiences and critics alike. With entries from over 50 countries, the recognition is seen as a major achievement for regional cinema from Assam on a global platform.

Yoodha – The Warrior narrates the poignant journey of a transgender woman striving for dignity, acceptance, and identity in contemporary society. Through a sensitive and realistic portrayal, the film addresses themes of inclusion, humanity, and resilience, offering a powerful reflection on the lived realities of the transgender community.
Director Smriti Prakash Boruah described the award as a humbling honour, stating that the film is an appeal for empathy and acceptance beyond social boundaries. Festival Director Soumitra Bagchi praised the film for its mature storytelling, visual strength, and emotionally impactful narrative. The award ceremony was held on December 14, further cementing Yoodha – The Warrior as a proud moment for Assamese cinema and socially driven filmmaking in India.
