Nazira, May 20: Members of the Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association, accompanied by hundreds of tea garden workers, staged a protest outside Geleky Police Station in Assam’s Nazira on Wednesday, May 20, demanding the withdrawal of a police case registered against a local student leader.
The demonstration was organised in response to a case filed against Sanjay Gowala, president of the Nazira branch of ATTSA. Protesters gathered near the police station from around 8:30 am before intensifying the agitation by surrounding the premises and raising slogans in support of their demands.
Leaders and members of the organisation described the case as unjustified and called on the authorities to resolve the issue at the earliest. Demonstrators sought immediate withdrawal of the case and maintained that action should be taken without delay.
The protesters also warned that a larger movement could be launched if their demand is not addressed. According to the organisation, further protest programmes may be announced in the coming days if no decision is taken regarding the withdrawal of the case.
A large number of tea garden workers joined the demonstration in support of ATTSA, leading to heightened tension in the area during the protest.
