Guwahati, Jan 18: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal triggered controversy on January 17 after making sharp and disparaging comments against Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi, drawing criticism for the language used.
Ajmal made the remarks while interacting with mediapersons on the sidelines of an inauguration programme of an educational institution at Balapara in the Jogighopa area of Assam’s Bongaigaon district. When asked about Akhil Gogoi, the AIUDF leader dismissed the query in a mocking tone, referring to the Raijor Dal chief as “mad” and questioning the relevance of his statements.
Continuing his attack, Ajmal remarked that a person he described as mad could say anything, and went on to make a sarcastic comparison by stating that a goat can eat anything. His comments were widely seen as personal and provocative.
The AIUDF chief also made a political assertion, claiming that both Akhil Gogoi and Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi would be “finished” politically in the current scenario.
Ajmal’s remarks were made in the presence of local leaders, educators and members of the public attending the event, and have since added to the growing exchange of sharp rhetoric among political leaders in Assam ahead of key political developments.
