Guwahati, May 9: BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda on Saturday credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and repeated engagement with the Northeast for the BJP’s strong electoral performance and rising public support, while highlighting Assam as a major example of rapid development under the NDA government.
Speaking to reporters, Panda described Modi as “the most popular leader on Earth” and said the BJP’s recent election results, particularly in Assam, reflected growing voter confidence in his leadership.
Emphasising the strategic importance of the Northeast in the BJP’s political outreach, Panda said Modi’s frequent visits to the region had contributed significantly to governance and development outcomes. “Modi ji has visited Assam and the North East 80 times as Prime Minister,” he said, contrasting the current approach with that of previous governments.
Referring to Assam’s performance under the BJP-led administration, Panda praised the “double engine government” led by the Centre and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling the state’s developmental progress “historic”.
“The progress that has happened in Assam under the double engine government has been historical,” Panda said, adding that the state had emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the country.
He highlighted the implementation of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes through the Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile framework, claiming the system had reduced corruption and improved delivery of welfare benefits at the grassroots level.
Panda also pointed to the expansion of healthcare infrastructure in the Northeast, stating that the number of medical colleges had increased substantially, with additional institutions currently under development.
Speaking on industrial growth, the BJP MP referred to large-scale investments in Assam, including a semiconductor facility project, and said the state was no longer reliant solely on traditional sectors such as tea and bamboo.
“Today, Assam is the fastest-growing economy in India,” he asserted.
Referring to the recently concluded Assembly elections, Panda said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a decisive mandate in Assam by winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP secured 82 seats, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front — won 10 seats each.
He also mentioned electoral outcomes in other states, including West Bengal and Puducherry, describing them as part of a broader shift in public support towards the BJP-led alliance, although some of the political developments and figures cited could not be independently verified.
