Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced the appointment of senior leader and National Vice President Baijayant Panda as the election in-charge for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Sunil Kumar Sharma, MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, and former Union Minister Darshana Ben Jardosh have been named as election co-in-charges.
According to an official statement issued by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, the appointments were approved by party National President JP Nadda and have come into effect immediately. The move is aimed at strengthening the party’s organisational framework in Assam well ahead of the 2026 polls.
Party sources said the early appointments reflect the BJP leadership’s focus on advance planning, booth-level mobilisation and closer coordination between the central and state units as the party seeks to retain power in the state for a third consecutive term.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision, expressing confidence that under Panda’s guidance, the NDA would secure a historic mandate in the upcoming elections. He also extended a warm welcome to Darshana Ben Jardosh and Sunil Kumar Sharma in their new roles.
Assam has been a key state for the BJP’s expansion in the Northeast over the past decade, with the party forming the government for two successive terms. The election in-charge team is expected to work closely with the state leadership to oversee campaign strategy, candidate selection and overall election management.
