Bajali Farmer Sets Example Through Mushroom Cultivation

Bajali: By taking up mushroom cultivation, Binay Pathak of Khalihamari area under Bamunkuchi revenue village in Bajali district has emerged as a shining example of self-reliance and sustainable livelihood. Aged over 50, Pathak’s journey reflects determination, innovation and a strong research-oriented mindset. Already self-sufficient through fishery, poultry and duck farming, Pathak recently ventured into mushroom cultivation at his residence, scripting yet another success story. He said the initiative not only strengthened his own livelihood but also aimed to popularise mushroom farming as a low-investment, high-nutrition agricultural practice in the region. His efforts have drawn widespread attention and inspired many in his neighbourhood.

Pathak informed that he is currently producing around 12 to 15 kg of mushrooms daily. At present, mushroom spawn has been planted in nearly 900 cylinders, and he is hopeful of scaling up production in the near future. He received professional training from Pranjal Baruah of Rani and has mastered the technical aspects of cultivation. According to him, mushroom farming can be started with an investment of about Rs 30,000, using basic resources such as paddy straw, a room, steaming cylinders and simple equipment. Milky and oyster mushroom varieties, sourced from West Bengal, have proven best suited for Assam’s climate.
