Barpeta: In a landmark verdict, the Barpeta District and Sessions Court has sentenced Rishabh Das to death for the brutal double murder of his wife, Binita Das, and their daughter, Hiya, in October 2023. Delivering the judgment, District and Sessions Judge Deepak Thakuria described the case as falling under the “rarest of the rare” category.
According to case details, Das attacked his wife and daughter with an axe during a domestic dispute, killing both on the spot. The gruesome act shocked the local community. Witnesses — including Hiya’s friend and her mother — immediately informed the police, leading to Das’s prompt arrest.

The court, after months of hearings and examination of evidence, held Das guilty of intentional and cold-blooded murder. Judge Thakuria stated that the nature and brutality of the crime left no room for leniency, emphasizing that the punishment should serve as both justice for the victims and a deterrent against domestic violence.
The judgment marks the first-ever death sentence in Barpeta district, underscoring a firm judicial stand against heinous acts of family violence.
