Guwahati: The BCCI has strongly condemned the alleged molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore, describing the incident as “very unfortunate” and contrary to India’s reputation for hospitality. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed regret, stating, “Nobody expected this kind of thing to happen because India is such a hospitable country. This should not have happened with any of the guests of the country.”
The incident occurred on October 23, when the players were walking from their hotel to a nearby café ahead of a group-stage ICC Women’s World Cup match against South Africa. The episode has unsettled the Australian team and drawn international attention to women athletes’ safety in India.
Authorities acted promptly, arresting a local resident, Aqueel of Azadnagar, within hours. DCP Crime Branch Rajesh Dandotiya confirmed that an FIR was registered and the accused was taken into custody following a strategic operation. He has been charged under Sections 74 and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Saikia assured that the BCCI will revamp security arrangements for all visiting teams, reinforcing the existing security ring to prevent such incidents in the future. Former India cricketer Reema Malhotra also condemned the act, citing India’s tradition of hospitality: “Athithi Devo Bhava — ‘Guest is God.’ The culprit must face strict punishment to prevent any repetition.”
The incident has reignited debates on athlete safety in India, prompting the BCCI and local authorities to commit to stringent measures for the remainder of the World Cup.
