Bhumi Pujan Performed for High-Security Jail at Bagta in Kamrup

Baihata Chariali: The Bhumi Pujan ceremony for the construction of a High-Security Jail was performed today at Bagta in Hajo area of Kamrup district, marking a major step towards strengthening Assam’s correctional and internal security infrastructure. The high-security jail is being built under a nationwide prison modernisation initiative of the Ministry of Home Affairs, aimed at isolating hardened criminals and radicalised elements from the general prison population. Assam is among only six states selected across the country for the establishment of such specialised facilities, highlighting the State’s growing role in national security preparedness.

The programme was attended by Rupesh Gowala, Minister of Labour Welfare, Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare; Dilip Saikia, MP; Bhabesh Kalita, MLA, Rangia LAC; Ajay Tiwari, Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Political Department, Government of Assam; Pulak Mahanta, Inspector General of Prisons, Assam; and Deba Kumar Mishra, District Commissioner, Kamrup, along with senior officials. Addressing the gathering, Minister Rupesh Gowala said the high-security jail would significantly enhance Assam’s internal security framework and institutional readiness. He stressed that such facilities are essential for the secure custody and effective management of high-risk inmates.

The proposed jail will have the capacity to house between 150 and 255 inmates and will be equipped with advanced surveillance systems, reinforced perimeter security, and modern correctional management infrastructure. The project is expected to be completed within two years. Gowala added that the initiative reflects Assam’s holistic development, encompassing governance, security, and justice delivery. The project is being implemented through coordinated efforts of the Government of Assam and the Ministry of Home Affairs, reaffirming their shared commitment to public safety and modern institutional development.
