Tezpur: Tezpur University (TU) organised a vibrant cultural evening on Monday to celebrate the birth centenary -year celebration of Bharat Ratna Xudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. The programme featured an array of performances by TU students and faculty, highlighting the philosophical and intellectual legacy of the legendary bard of the Brahmaputra.
The event began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Vice Chancellor Prof. Shambhu Nath Singh, followed by a felicitation of the distinguished guest Loknath Goswami, noted artist. The University Anthem, penned by Dr. Hazarika himself was rendered by the TU Music Club, setting the tone for the evening.

Speaking on the occasion as the Chief Guest, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Singh paid rich tributes to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, describing him as “not just a name, but an emotion that resonates in every Assamese heart.” He recalled Dr. Hazarika’s deep association with Tezpur University — as a member of its first Board of Management, composer of the University Anthem, and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate.
Loknath Goswami in his address said that Bhupen Hazarika’s songs, voice, and vision captured the very essence of Assam — its rivers, hills, struggles, and indomitable spirit. He urged all to embrace the occasion not merely as a celebration, but a commitment to the future — a pledge to build Assam, India, and the world that Bhupen da dreamt of.

The evening showcased a blend of music, dance, and drama. Performances included a music recital by Dr. Ananya Bonjyotsna, a dance presentation titled “Bhupen Hazarika: A Musician of the Masses” by TU students, group dances by Nrityangan Dance Club, and a special guest performance by Sri Loknath Goswami. The TU Music Club presented soulful choruses, while a drama titled “Pratidhani Suno Moi” captivated the audience.
