Bir Lachit Sena Leaders Rontu Pani Phukan and Bikash Asom Released on Bail, Receive Grand Welcome in Tinsukia and Sivasagar

Guwahati, Feb 13: After nearly three months in judicial custody, Bir Lachit Sena chief Rontu Pani Phukan and leader Bikash Asom were granted bail and walked out of Tinsukia District Jail on Thursday, amid tight security and an enthusiastic crowd of supporters. Residents and party members had gathered early in the morning to greet the leaders, waving flags, raising slogans, and offering traditional gamosas as a mark of respect. Firecrackers lit up the surroundings as Phukan and Asom briefly addressed the gathering before departing for Sivasagar.

A similar reception awaited the leaders in Sivasagar, where supporters lined both sides of National Highway 37 at Darikapar. The convoy was greeted with loud cheers, festive celebrations, and a show of unwavering public support, reflecting the organisation’s strong grassroots presence in the region.

Speaking to the media, Rontu Pani Phukan described the period in custody as a “test of patience and commitment.” He said the Bir Lachit Sena would soon hold internal discussions to determine which regional party it would offer moral support to in the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, stressing that any decision would prioritise the interests of indigenous communities. On Bikash Asom’s membership in the organisation, Phukan added that the matter would be addressed internally, with a formal announcement expected in the coming days.

Addressing criticism on social media, he remarked that “real strength lies on the streets, not on Facebook,” highlighting that the organisation’s influence is firmly rooted among the people. The release of the two leaders has already triggered renewed political discussions in Upper Assam ahead of the elections, signalling a potential shift in regional dynamics.
