Biren Singh Calls IDP Resettlement ‘Top Priority’, Proposes Dedicated Panel in Manipur

Imphal, April 7: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on April 7 said the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) remains his foremost priority amid the continuing crisis in Manipur.

Speaking to the media, Singh emphasised the need to constitute a dedicated committee to address the rehabilitation of those displaced by ethnic violence. He said a coordinated and structured approach, with the support of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and other MLAs, would be essential to ensure effective resettlement.

“As a responsible elected member, my focus will be on the resettlement of the IDPs. With the cooperation of the MLAs and the present CM, we have to form a special committee specifically for this purpose,” he said.

He added that once the committee is formed, the issue would be taken up with the Ministry of Home Affairs to seek further assistance from the Centre.

The displacement crisis stems from ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities that erupted in 2023, resulting in hundreds of deaths and displacing over 50,000 people.

Singh also noted that several civil society organisations, including the United Naga Council, have been calling for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census is conducted in the state.
