Kohima, March 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party on March 19 unveiled its candidates for the upcoming assembly by-elections, with key contests scheduled in Nagaland and Tripura.
The party has nominated Daochier I Imchen from the 28-Koridang (ST) constituency in Nagaland, while Jahar Chakraborti will contest from the 56-Dharmanagar seat in Tripura.
Both seats fell vacant following the deaths of sitting legislators — former minister Imkong L Imchen in Nagaland and senior leader Biswa Bandhu Sen in Tripura.
The by-elections are part of a wider exercise by the Election Commission of India to fill vacancies in eight constituencies across six states, most arising due to the demise of incumbent members.
In addition to the northeastern states, the BJP has also announced candidates for constituencies in Goa and Karnataka. Ritesh Ravi Naik will contest from Ponda in Goa, while Veerabhadrayya Charantimath and Srinivas T Dasakariyappa have been fielded from Bagalkot and Davanagere South, respectively.
Polling for constituencies in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura will be held on April 9 in the first phase, while seats in Gujarat and Maharashtra will go to polls on April 23. Counting of votes for all constituencies is scheduled for May 4, with the election process set to conclude by May 6.
The notification for the first phase was issued on March 16. The last date for filing nominations is March 23, followed by scrutiny on March 24, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26.
