Digboi: A shocking case of violence has rocked Borbil Gaon Panchayat under Digboi in Assam’s Tinsukia district, where Subash Dehingya, the BJP Booth President of Ward No. 9, allegedly attacked a 63-year-old woman, Ukhaprabha Kalita, with a sharp machete on Wednesday morning.
According to reports, the incident took place in broad daylight while the elderly woman was erecting a bamboo fence within her residential compound. Eyewitnesses and family members claimed that the accused, known in the area for his controversial behaviour, approached the woman without provocation and launched a sudden, violent assault.
The victim, who is the mother of late Arup Kalita, a former journalist of Digboi, sustained serious injuries and began bleeding profusely. Her son, Gullu Kalita, alleged that the accused trespassed onto their land before attacking his mother with a machete. She was rushed to the Digboi Community Health Centre and later referred to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh for advanced medical care.
Upon receiving information, Digboi Police arrived at the scene and launched a manhunt to nab the accused, who remains absconding. Meanwhile, Gullu Kalita claimed that Dehingya has been trying to negotiate through intermediaries to escape legal consequences. “We are filing an FIR with the local police station this evening,” he said, demanding strict action and exemplary punishment under the law.
The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, and police have begun an investigation to determine the motive behind the brutal attack. The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who have called for justice for the elderly woman.
