Gauripur: In a major crackdown on the rampant black marketing of subsidized urea fertilizer, Gauripur police seized a boat loaded with sacks of urea from the Baghmara–Tipkai river, arresting one person in the process.
The haul has exposed a suspected syndicate allegedly running an illegal fertilizer trade through river routes. For months, farmers in the region have complained of artificial shortages, even as subsidized urea was reportedly diverted from official supply chains and transported clandestinely to areas like Kaunbari and Piajbari.

The breakthrough came when a group of vigilant youths from Baghmara intercepted a suspicious boat and kept it under watch for two days before informing the police. Acting promptly, the police seized the consignment and detained the boatman, identified as Sanidul Haque. However, other members of the network remain at large.
The seizure has reignited concerns about the control of the fertilizer black market and the challenges faced by cultivators, who often pay inflated prices or suffer yield losses due to shortages.
