Dibrugarh: A joint site inspection was conducted at Bogibeel in Assam’s Dibrugarh district to assess the proposed location for a riverine lighthouse on the Brahmaputra, officials said. The inspection was carried out by officials of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) and the EPC contractor. The teams assessed the site and discussed technical and other requirements related to the proposed project. The proposed lighthouse is aimed at strengthening navigational infrastructure along the Brahmaputra and improving safety for vessels operating on the inland waterway. The site visit also facilitated coordination between the agencies and the contractor for implementation of the project.

The Bogibeel facility is part of a larger initiative to establish India’s first riverine lighthouses on an inland waterway. In March 2026, foundation stones were laid for four such facilities along the Brahmaputra, or National Waterway-2, at Bogibeel, Pandu, Silghat and Biswanath Ghat. According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the four-lighthouse project has an estimated investment of around ₹84 crore. Each lighthouse is planned to be about 20 metres high, with a geographical range of 14 nautical miles and a luminous range of 8–10 nautical miles. The facilities are planned to use solar power.
The project also includes tourism-oriented facilities such as museums, amphitheatres, cafeterias, children’s play areas, souvenir shops and landscaped public spaces. The development comes as inland waterway activity on the Brahmaputra continues to expand, with the waterway serving as an important corridor for cargo and passenger movement in Assam and the Northeast.
