Bordubi Hosts First-Ever All Assam Rapid Chess Tournament 

Duliajan: In a landmark moment for the region’s sporting landscape, Sankardev Shishu Niketan, Bordubi, in collaboration with the Bordubi Chess Academy, successfully hosted the first-ever All Assam Rapid Chess Tournament 2025 on October 26, drawing an enthusiastic response from chess lovers across the state.

The event began at 9 a.m. with a touching tribute to late singer Zubeen Garg, symbolizing the harmony between culture and sport. Featuring a total prize fund of ₹72,000, the tournament distributed 49 prizes — 15 in the Open Category and the rest across various age-group divisions, offering opportunities for both emerging and veteran players.

Over 160 participants from districts across Assam competed, showcasing remarkable skill and sportsmanship. The event was graced by International player Laishram Imocha, who served as Advisor. Having represented Assam at the Commonwealth and Asian Games, Imocha praised the organizers for promoting chess at the grassroots level.

Prominent chess players Cheniram Pegu, Neelav Jyoti Borthakur, and Utpal Boruah also took part, adding prestige to the event. Cheniram Pegu emerged as the champion, securing the top position with stellar performance.

The tournament’s success was credited to Manoranjan Sarma, Founder of Sankardev Shishu Niketan, Dr. Bhaswati Devi, Managing Director of the tournament, and Pranab Jyoti Baruah, Secretary of Bordubi Chess Academy, whose dedicated efforts earned wide appreciation from the Bordubi chess fraternity.

The event marked a new beginning for competitive chess in Bordubi, inspiring hopes for more such state-level tournaments in the future.
