Brahmaputra Literature Festival 2026 to Be Held in Sivasagar from Feb. 6 to 8

Zubeen Garg podcast revenue to back young artists: Rita Chowdhury

Guwahati: Renowned writer and novelist Dr Rita Chowdhury on Sunday announced the schedule and vision of the Brahmaputra Literature Festival 2026, stating that the three-day cultural event will be held in Sivasagar from February 6 to 8 next year.

Addressing a press conference in Panbazar, Dr Chowdhury said the festival aims to celebrate literature, music and humanity by bringing together rhythm, words and art on a common platform. She noted that the event would serve as a confluence of diverse creative expressions while also nurturing and promoting emerging literary and artistic voices from across Assam.

During the interaction, Dr Chowdhury also unveiled a long-term initiative to support budding artists, inspired by the legacy of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. She announced that the USD 2,909 earned from Zubeen Garg’s YouTube podcast would be placed in a fixed deposit for the next 20 years, with the interest generated from the fund being used to encourage and provide opportunities to young artists.

Speaking emotionally about Zubeen Garg, Dr Chowdhury said his influence on Assam’s cultural landscape remains profound. She remarked that he had left a deep imprint on the cultural soul of the state and inspired countless individuals through his work and perseverance. Acknowledging the sense of loss felt by his admirers, she said the festival platform would continue to work in their interest and preserve his legacy.

Responding to queries on the chargesheet filed in connection with Zubeen Garg’s death, Dr Chowdhury said she would not comment as the matter is sub judice. She added that efforts are underway to compile and preserve the singer’s complete body of work, expressing hope that justice will ultimately prevail.
