Guwahati: The organisers of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) have announced the postponement of its 10th edition to 2026, following the untimely death of Assam’s cultural icon, Zubeen Garg. The festival was earlier scheduled to be held from December 4 to 7, 2025.
The decision was taken as the state continues to mourn the loss of the legendary musician, filmmaker, and humanitarian, whose artistry shaped the cultural landscape of Assam and the Northeast. Having recorded over 38,000 songs in 40 languages, Zubeen Garg’s influence transcended boundaries, making him one of India’s most prolific and beloved artistes.
Festival Director Tanushree Hazarika said the postponement was made as a gesture of respect to Zubeen Garg’s memory. “His passing is not just a loss for Assam, but for everyone who found their rhythm and identity through his art. As a festival born from this land and its people, it doesn’t feel right to celebrate when the heart of our culture is in mourning. This year, we pause to remember, to reflect, and to honour him,” she said.
According to organizers, the decision followed extensive consultations with the festival’s advisors and core team.
Creative Director Pallavi Chumki Barua thanked supporters for their understanding, adding, “BVFF has always been about creativity, community, and connection. While this is a time for pause, we look forward to returning stronger, with the same passion for meaningful cinema and cultural exchange.”
Technical Director Samujjal Kashyap described the loss as deeply personal. “Having had the chance to work closely with Zubeen Da, his passing feels deeply personal. But this grief extends far beyond us — it’s a shared emotion across Assam, the Northeast, and the entire country,” he said.
BVFF has confirmed that full refunds will be issued to filmmakers who had submitted entries for the 10th edition. Submissions made through FilmFreeway will be refunded via the platform, while those who submitted offline will be contacted directly by the BVFF team to complete the process.
