Agartala: Tripura Police have arrested three individuals, including a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, for allegedly possessing brown sugar valued at around ₹5 lakh. The arrests were made late Wednesday night during a joint operation conducted by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Tripura Police.
Officials said the operation was launched following a tip-off about a group transporting narcotics through the region. Acting on the information, the joint team intercepted the suspects and detained them for questioning. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sajiul Islam (22) and Farid Akhter (23) from Assam, and Salim Uddin (36), a BSF personnel posted with the 122nd Battalion at Santirbazar in South Tripura district.
During the search, police recovered 128 grams of brown sugar packed in 10 separate cases from their possession. “We received specific information that some persons would be travelling with brown sugar. Acting swiftly, the GRP and Tripura Police jointly conducted an operation and detained the trio,” a senior police official stated.
A case has been registered against the accused, and they will be produced before the court. Authorities have estimated the market value of the seized contraband at approximately ₹5 lakh.
Investigators are now probing whether the accused are part of a larger drug trafficking network operating across the northeastern region.
