BTC to Seek Forest Department Report on Runikhata Violence

Kokrajhar: Hagrama Mohilary on Saturday said the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will seek a detailed report from the Forest Department regarding the recent violence in Runikhata in Chirang district. Addressing the media, Mohilary clarified that law and order falls under the jurisdiction of the Assam government, and any further action would depend on the findings of the official inquiry. He stated that the council would examine whether procedural lapses during the eviction drive may have triggered the unrest.

The BTC is expected to formally request the report on Monday. Mohilary emphasized the need for a fair and thorough investigation, noting that clarity would emerge only after reviewing the department’s findings, particularly concerning allegations of attacks on police personnel and damage to a journalist’s vehicle. Responding to claims of political involvement, Mohilary said such possibilities cannot be entirely ruled out but cautioned against blaming entire communities for the actions of a few individuals. He added that those found responsible would face legal consequences.

He also announced that he, along with BTC executive members and councillors, would visit Runikhata to assess the ground situation. Meanwhile, the Assam government has suspended mobile internet and data services in Chirang and adjoining Kokrajhar districts as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of rumours. However, voice calls and broadband services remain operational.

Security has been intensified across the region, with personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and state police deployed for round-the-clock patrolling. Authorities confirmed that around 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, with further detentions likely as the investigation progresses. Officials stated that the situation in Runikhata is currently stable, though security forces remain on high alert to prevent any fresh incidents.
