A burglary at the Railway Department residential quarters in Assam’s Kokrajhar during the early hours of July 19 has heightened concerns over a spate of thefts reported across the town in recent weeks.
According to reports, unidentified burglars broke into the DS-4 Railway quarters, the official residence of Kokrajhar Railway Station Master Chandan Kumar. His wife, Suman Kumari, said the intruders entered the house at around 4.30 am by opening a sliding window before unlocking the main door.
The family was asleep when the burglary took place and only discovered the incident after waking up in the morning and realising their mobile phones were missing.
The thieves allegedly escaped with two mobile phones, cash and gold and silver jewellery, including a gold mangalsutra, rings and payal. The total value of the stolen property has been estimated at around Rs 4 lakh.
Police have registered the case and launched an investigation to identify those involved in the burglary.
The latest incident has added to growing public concern over a series of thefts in Kokrajhar. Residents pointed out that similar burglaries have recently been reported from localities including Shanti Nagar and Subhashpalli, prompting calls for stronger security measures in the town.
