Guwahati: The Burn Care Foundation, a trust of NEMCARE Hospital, observed the 12th Burn Care Day 2026 through a day-long programme at the Madhabdev Shankardev Kalakshetra Auditorium recently. The event aimed to promote burn prevention, improve treatment awareness, and strengthen professional capacity in burn care.
The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Vinita Puri, Professor and Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, KEM Medical College, Mumbai, as Chief Guest, while Dr. Kiran K. Nakarmi and Dr. Shankar Man Rai, Plastic Surgeons from Kirtipur Hospital, Kathmandu, attended as Special Guests. Dr. Puri delivered an informative talk on burn prevention and first aid.
Dr. Hitesh Baruah, President of the Burn Care Foundation, delivered the welcome address. Dr. Bhupendra Prasad Sarma, Secretary of the Foundation, presented an audio-visual documentary highlighting advancements in burn treatment and revealed that 6,189 patients have been treated since 2010, reducing mortality to 22.6 percent. Dr. Nareswar Sarma spoke on the humanitarian initiative “Arta Sewa” supporting underprivileged patients.
The programme featured moving testimonies by burn survivors and honoured outstanding staff of the NEMCARE Burn Unit with Best Workers’ Awards. A short film on burn awareness, produced by Dr. B. P. Sarma, directed by Smita Barman, was also released. In the afternoon, an Essential Burn Care training programme was conducted in collaboration with INTERBURNS and the Government of Assam, with over 110 doctors, nurses, and paramedics participating.
