Cachar, May 20: In an initiative aimed at strengthening communal harmony and fostering mutual respect among different communities, members of the Islamic community in Udharbond Pangram of Assam’s Cachar district have decided not to carry out animal sacrifice during this year’s Eid celebrations.
The decision was taken unanimously during a community meeting organised ahead of the festival, where participants discussed measures to preserve peace and social harmony in the area. Along with refraining from animal sacrifice, members of the local Muslim community also resolved to avoid the consumption of prohibited meat as part of efforts to ensure that the religious sentiments of other communities are respected.
Community representatives stated that the resolution was adopted with the broader objective of reinforcing unity, brotherhood and peaceful coexistence among people living in the region.
The development comes at a time when community organisations in different areas have increasingly been encouraging interfaith understanding through dialogue and consensus-based approaches aimed at maintaining social cohesion.
Residents associated with the meeting said the move reflects the community’s commitment to protecting communal amity and promoting mutual respect among people belonging to different faiths across the district.
