Silchar: Continuing its relentless crackdown on bogus medical practitioners, Cachar Police on Monday arrested yet another individual for allegedly posing as a doctor without any medical qualifications. With this arrest, the number of fake doctors apprehended in the district has now reached 13.
The accused, identified as Bipul Chandra Nath, had been treating patients under the false name “Dr. B.C. Nath”, despite possessing only a matriculation-level education. According to Cachar Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta, Nath had been deceiving patients for several years by fabricating his medical credentials.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, a police team conducted a raid in the Ambicapatty area of Silchar, leading to Nath’s arrest. Officers also recovered forged medical documents, including a fake MBBS degree certificate.
“Preliminary investigation confirms that the accused has no legitimate medical background and had been exploiting unsuspecting patients using forged credentials,” SSP Mahatta said. A case (No. 978/25) has been registered at Silchar Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
The SSP credited public vigilance for helping expose such frauds, adding that increased awareness has played a crucial role in identifying imposters. “We have intensified surveillance at clinics, hospitals, and health centres, ensuring thorough verification of medical staff credentials,” he stated, warning that the crackdown on quack doctors will continue.
This latest arrest follows a series of operations in September, during which two imposters were nabbed within 24 hours. Across Assam, at least 22 fake medical practitioners have been apprehended in recent months under a joint initiative by the State Health Department and local police, aimed at eliminating quackery from the state’s healthcare system.
