Cachar Police Recover Stolen Tin Sheets Worth ₹15 Lakh, Arrest Three More in Lakhipur Theft Case

Police in Assam’s Cachar district have recovered stolen tin sheets valued at nearly ₹15 lakh and arrested three additional accused, including a hardware trader, in connection with a major theft case reported from Lakhipur. The latest arrests have taken the total number of people held in the case to six.

According to the police, Jarif Uddin Laskar, proprietor of M.M. Hardware at Baskandi Bazaar, had placed an order for a truckload of tin sheets worth around ₹15 lakh from Burnihat on May 20. Instead of transporting the consignment to its intended destination, the truck driver, along with his associates, allegedly diverted the goods.

After the trader lodged a complaint, Baskandi Police initiated an investigation. During the early stages of the probe, officers recovered the abandoned truck from the Kalain area and arrested the driver along with two other suspects.

Continuing the investigation, police arrested Himon Das from Tulargram in Sonai and Satyabrata Adhikari from Kanakpur in Joypur on the night of June 29. Investigators alleged that both were acting as intermediaries in the theft.

Based on information obtained during their interrogation, police conducted a raid at the warehouse of hardware trader Sushanta Dey in Joypur New Market, where the stolen tin sheets were recovered. Investigators, however, stated that a portion of the consignment had already been disposed of before the recovery.

The three newly arrested accused were produced before the Lakhipur court on June 30, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Police said the investigation is still in progress and suspect that more individuals may have been involved in the theft. Efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend the remaining accused.
