Cachar, May 23: In a major anti-drug operation, Cachar Police on May 23 seized 21 grams of heroin and 10,000 Yaba tablets from a mechanised boat on the Barak River in Assam’s Cachar district and arrested two persons in connection with the case.
According to officials, the operation was carried out late on May 23 near Lakhipur after police received intelligence inputs regarding alleged narcotics smuggling through river routes.
Police intercepted the boat during the operation and recovered the contraband substances before taking two individuals into custody.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the operational team for its vigilance and ongoing efforts against drug trafficking networks in the state.
Officials noted that Yaba tablets remain prohibited in India as they contain methamphetamine, a controlled psychotropic substance under narcotics laws.
Assam Police and other enforcement agencies have intensified anti-narcotics operations in recent months, resulting in multiple seizures involving heroin, codeine syrup and other prohibited substances as part of broader efforts to disrupt trafficking networks operating through the Northeast corridor.
