Calf Killed on NH-15 Near Kakopathar, Renewing Safety Concerns After Fatal Crash

Tinsukia, April 23: A three-day-old calf was run over and killed by passing vehicles early Thursday near Lajum village in Kakopathar, Tinsukia, just metres from the site of a recent fatal accident that had already heightened safety concerns along the stretch.

The incident occurred on a straight section of National Highway 15, where residents allege that vehicles frequently travel at high speed without slowing. The calf’s owner was seen carrying the carcass away for burial, while witnesses said the animal’s mother remained at the spot, distressed beside its body.

The area is still reeling from a fatal collision on April 17, when two young men — Pranajit Das of Kakopathar and Shashank Moran of Teji village — were killed after a speeding Bolero reportedly rammed into them. The victims had been seated on a stationary motorcycle when the vehicle struck. Police later detained the driver and seized the vehicle, with preliminary findings indicating alcohol consumption.

That incident had triggered protests, with residents blocking the highway, burning tyres and demanding stricter enforcement, a permanent traffic outpost and compensation for the victims’ families.

Locals have pointed to a pattern of reckless driving along this stretch, citing overspeeding, drunk driving and mobile phone use behind the wheel. The road’s design, described as wide and straight, is seen as encouraging high speeds, particularly during night hours.

Following the latest incident, residents have renewed calls for tighter monitoring, speed control measures and improved safety infrastructure. Authorities are being urged to enhance patrolling, enforce drink-driving regulations and address distracted driving to prevent further accidents on this key route in Upper Assam.
