Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had granted the mandatory sanction required to initiate legal proceedings against those accused in the death of singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore.
The approval, issued under Section 208 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), marked a key step in advancing the case. Sarma explained that the provision mandates prior sanction from the Central Government before any crime committed outside India can be taken up by a court. With the clearance in place, the state government can now file the chargesheet and begin trial proceedings.
Sarma reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing justice and said the chargesheet would be filed before 10 December 2025. He described the development as significant, stating that it strengthened the legal foundation of the case.
The announcement came on the 53rd birth anniversary of the late singer. Sarma said the day served as a reminder of Zubeen Garg’s music, voice and enduring place in the hearts of the people of Assam, adding that the government remained steadfast in its pursuit of justice.
