Centre Proposes Rs 70 Crore Allocation for Dima Hasao Development

Guwahati, Feb 7: The Central Government proposed an allocation of Rs 70 crore for the development of Dima Hasao in the 2026–27 Union Budget, with the funding aimed at addressing long-standing infrastructure and development challenges in Assam’s hill district.

The announcement was made by Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, during a press conference held at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan in Haflong. He said the proposed allocation reflected sustained efforts by the Centre to improve basic services and accelerate development in the district.

Gorlosa stated that earlier central assistance had already helped resolve key issues, including electricity supply in remote villages such as Chemkhar and the payment of salaries to water supply workers. He said these interventions had brought tangible improvements to daily life in interior areas.

Highlighting projects implemented under the BJP-led government, Gorlosa said student hostels had been constructed with a central allocation of Rs 65 crore, while a Bamboo Industrial Park had been set up at Mandardicha at a cost of Rs 75 crore. He expressed confidence that with continued efforts over the next five to ten years, Dima Hasao’s developmental challenges could be fully addressed.

He also referred to the revival of the Silchar–Saurashtra East–West Corridor national highway project, which had remained stalled for years. According to him, the project had gained momentum after the change in government and was now scheduled for inauguration in March.

Responding to criticism from the opposition, Gorlosa dismissed allegations by the Congress that the BJP had taken over tribal land in the district. He termed the claims unfounded and alleged that previous Congress governments had allotted thousands of acres of land to private companies.

Gorlosa further announced that recruitment would soon be carried out for 100 teachers in Middle English Schools and 200 teachers in Lower Primary Schools across the district. He also said revenue collection by the forest department had increased significantly, rising from around Rs 3 crore during the Congress period to Rs 70 crore under the present BJP government.
