Centre Sanctions Rs 747.72 Crore for Road and Bridge Projects in Assam Amid State Development Push

Guwahati, Feb 13: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on February 13 announced the approval of Rs 747.72 crore for 26 road and bridge projects across Assam under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) and Setu Bandhan schemes. Of this allocation, Rs 677.98 crore has been earmarked for 10 projects under the CRIF scheme, while Rs 129.74 crore is dedicated to bridge development under Setu Bandhan.

The approved projects aim to improve regional connectivity, enhance transportation efficiency, and reduce travel time, while facilitating trade and economic growth throughout the state. Gadkari highlighted that the initiatives will strengthen links between remote and urban areas, contributing to Assam’s overall socio-economic development.

The announcement comes shortly after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects in Majuli district on February 12. During his visit, Sarma inaugurated the Majuli–Jorhat connecting highway, along with the academic building and girls’ hostel of Majuli Cultural University, an integrated office complex housing the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and District Transport Officer, a Government Model Degree College, the Dakhinpat Satra Museum, and the Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Complex.

Collectively valued at over Rs 2,200 crore, these projects in Majuli are intended to strengthen infrastructure, enhance public services, and support long-term development in the river island district. The combined efforts of the Centre and state government reflect a focused push to modernise connectivity and public facilities across Assam.
