Centre to Develop Matabari Tourism Circuit, Aims to Transform Tripura into Global Tourism Hub

The Central Government is determined to unlock Tripura’s vast tourism potential and showcase its rich cultural and spiritual heritage on the global stage, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday, November 12.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on the development of the Matabari Tourism Circuit in Tripura, Scindia urged officials to incorporate global best practices and take inspiration from successful tourism models such as Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kevadia in Gujarat.

Guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to turn every state into a world-class tourism destination, Scindia said the Centre aims to position Tripura as a vibrant hub for cultural, spiritual, and eco-tourism.

During the meeting, officials presented detailed plans outlining the state’s tourism roadmap. Discussions focused on enhancing international connectivity through Agartala airport, revamping major attractions like Neer Mahal, Tepania, Jampui Pura, and Udaipur, and developing the Dumbur islands under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to attract private investment and drive sustainable growth.

Scindia also stressed the importance of integrating civic conservation, architectural innovation, and skill development within the state’s tourism framework. He highlighted the need to strengthen seven key verticals, including training local tourist guides and allied service providers, to generate employment and build local capacity.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha attended the meeting alongside senior officials from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and the state government. The initiative is expected to accelerate Tripura’s emergence as a premier tourism destination in Northeast India, combining natural beauty, heritage, and economic opportunity.
