Chandramohan Patowary Sworn In as Pro-tem Speaker of 16th Assam Assembly

GUWAHATI, May 15: Senior BJP leader Chandramohan Patowary was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly on May 15 during a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.

The oath of office was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in the presence of ministers, newly elected legislators and senior government officials.

With the swearing-in, Patowary formally assumed charge as the Pro-tem Speaker ahead of the commencement of proceedings of the newly constituted Assembly following the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

As Pro-tem Speaker, Chandramohan Patowary will conduct the initial proceedings of the House, including administering the oath to newly elected MLAs and overseeing the election process for the Speaker of the Assembly.

The ceremony at Raj Bhavan was attended by several members of the new Assam government along with senior administrative officials.

The appointment comes ahead of the first session of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, which is expected to begin in the coming days.
