CM Announces Major Educational and Infrastructure Initiatives; Assam to Host Series of High-Profile Visits

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday inaugurated the Amrit Kalash initiative at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra and unveiled a series of upcoming state and central government programmes set to shape Assam’s development agenda in the coming months. Highlighting Assam’s growing prominence in education and infrastructure, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of the Kanaklata Barua State University, a new institution poised to follow the legacy of Gauhati University and Dibrugarh University, both built from the ground up.

The proposed university will be constructed on 771 bighas of land in Gohpur with an approved budget of ₹500 crore. The bidding process for the project has already been completed, and the university is envisioned as a modern centre of higher learning with advanced academic programmes comparable to India’s top universities. The Union Finance Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the university on November 8, marking the formal beginning of its academic journey.

In addition, the Chief Minister confirmed that the IT Guwahati project has been assigned a permanent mentor to oversee its long-term development. He also outlined a series of upcoming high-profile visits to Assam by senior Union ministers. The Union Finance Minister, who will arrive tomorrow, is set to interact with around 30 emerging youth at the Semiconductors unit in Jagiroad, before inaugurating the Gateway of Guwahati Cruise Terminal and the newly developed Brahmaputra Riverfront at Uzan Bazaar.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit the state on November 9 to witness a special air show at Lachit Ghat, featuring advanced aircraft including Rafale and Sukhoi jets performing in Assam for the first time.

The Chief Minister further announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a new terminal and lay the foundation stone for the Namarup Fertiliser Factory in December. The Prime Minister is expected to return to Assam in January to inaugurate the North Guwahati Bridge and attend events at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati. Around the same time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to visit the state to participate in programmes at the Jyoti-Bishnu Auditorium, the Batadrava project, and other booth-related events.

Sharing details of his packed political schedule, Sarma mentioned his ongoing engagements in Bihar, stating, “I had planned 12 meetings over three days in Bihar, but I will be able to attend only nine. Although more meetings were requested, the visits of central ministers prevent me from attending the remaining ones. I will still travel to Bihar today to hold meetings.”

With multiple major inaugurations, visits, and educational projects lined up, the Chief Minister underscored that Assam is entering a crucial phase of growth and transformation, blending heritage, innovation, and national collaboration.
