Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday clarified his financial standing, asserting that he owns no property apart from what he earns through his official salary.
Responding to a journalist’s question on allegations by opposition parties regarding his family’s assets, Sarma said,
“I don’t have property at all. My wife works for her wellbeing — she does not steal or take anything unlawfully. If someone is earning honestly, then what is the issue? Apart from my salary, I do not have anything.”
The Chief Minister’s statement comes amid renewed public scrutiny of politicians’ assets. Sarma sought to underline his personal integrity and transparent lifestyle, emphasizing his commitment to accountability in public life.

Meanwhile, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, entrepreneur and wife of the Chief Minister, has filed a criminal defamation case against Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and several others over allegations made against her and her company, Golden Threads of Assam.
The case, registered as CR Case No. 502/25 at the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, Guwahati, follows remarks made by Gogoi during a September 30 protest, where he linked Sharma’s company to the North East Festival in Singapore — an event coinciding with the controversy surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg.
Sharma’s counsel, Advocate Kishor Dutta, dismissed the claims as “baseless and defamatory,” clarifying that Golden Threads of Assam had no involvement whatsoever with the Singapore event.

In a Facebook post, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma expressed disappointment over what she called “political mudslinging”, reaffirming her intent to protect her reputation through lawful means.
