CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Says Details of Gaurav Gogoi’s Alleged Pakistan Links to Be Disclosed by Month-End

Guwahati, Jan 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday claimed that details of alleged links between Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan would be made public by the end of January. The chief minister made the statement during a Facebook Live interaction, launching a sharp attack on the Congress and its Assam unit leadership.

Sarma accused the Congress of compromising Assam’s interests through what he described as repeated “appeasement of a particular community” for political gain, warning that such actions posed a threat to the state’s identity, unity and national security. He alleged that the party’s approach was weakening Assam from within and undermining the interests of its people.

“The Congress has kneeled before a particular community. This is not for the welfare of anyone, but at the cost of our motherland and the identity of our people. This cannot be accepted,” Sarma said, calling on the party leadership to introspect.

Referring to allegations earlier raised by the BJP against Gogoi, the Jorhat MP and Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, the chief minister said the issue went beyond routine political rivalry. “Special affection for a specific community and secret contact with Pakistan—these are dangers for Assam,” he claimed.

Sarma said he would place “complete details” before the public after returning from the World Economic Forum in Davos, setting a clear timeline for disclosure before the end of the month. “Once I return from Davos, I will put all the facts before the people,” he said.

Invoking the theme of protecting Assam’s ‘jati’, the chief minister alleged that vested interests were deliberately attempting to weaken the state’s cultural and social fabric. He urged people to remain united to safeguard Assam’s identity.

The chief minister also targeted the Congress over the recent induction of former All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) president Rejaul Karim Sarkar into the party. Sarma referred to remarks allegedly made by Sarkar suggesting that Sivasagar should be turned into Dhubri, comments that sparked widespread criticism.

Highlighting Sivasagar’s historical and cultural importance, Sarma described it as the heart of Assamese civilisation—the former capital of the Ahom dynasty, the birthplace of Assam’s first newspaper Orunudoi, and home to heritage landmarks such as the UNESCO-recognised Charaideo Maidam and the Shivadol temple. He said Sivasagar and Dhubri have distinct cultural identities and that “it is neither possible nor acceptable to turn one into the other”.

Sarma further alleged that Sarkar had made remarks linked to “education jihad” and future administrative control over districts such as Sivasagar, Jorhat and Guwahati. He questioned why senior Congress leaders present at the event did not object at the time and criticised Gogoi for remaining silent on the issue.

The chief minister also accused the Congress of a pattern of inaction, claiming the party had failed to act firmly against leaders demanding reservation on the basis of religion, which he said was against constitutional principles.
