Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that each participant of the Guinness World Record-winning Jhumur Binandini performance will receive ₹25,000 during a special felicitation ceremony at the Veterinary Field, Khanapara, on October 16.
The announcement came during a live social media session on Sunday, where the Chief Minister said the event would honour the performers’ outstanding cultural contribution and fulfill the state government’s earlier commitment.
“In a bid to showcase Jhumur on the global stage, we had invited youth from tea communities to perform during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in April. At that time, I had promised to invite them again for a felicitation ceremony in September. Although it was delayed, we will now host it on October 16,” Sarma said.
The Jhumur Binandini performance, which brought together nearly 9,000 artistes from Assam’s tea communities, earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records earlier this year, marking a proud moment for the state’s cultural heritage.
Sarma also announced that students under the Nijut Moina scheme would start receiving their financial benefits from November, with payments for both October and November included in the first disbursement. “After Diwali, we will felicitate the Nijut Moina beneficiaries. The funds will then be directly credited to their accounts from December onwards,” he added.
In a message to the people ahead of Diwali, the Chief Minister urged citizens to support local artisans by purchasing traditional firecrackers made in Barpeta, home to Assam’s historic atasbaji craft. “This Diwali, let’s celebrate with Barpeta-made firecrackers. I will be using them myself. Let us enjoy the festival while keeping Zubeen Da in our hearts,” Sarma said, paying tribute to the late music legend Zubeen Garg.
The upcoming felicitation at Khanapara is expected to be a grand celebration of Assam’s cultural pride, blending recognition, remembrance, and festivity.
