CM Sarma Accuses Groups of Using Zubeen Garg’s Name to Shield ‘Miya Encroachers’

Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing a public meeting in Nalbari, launched a strong criticism of what he termed “Miya politics,” alleging that certain groups were invoking the name of late singer Zubeen Garg to prevent the eviction of encroachers.

Dr Sarma said the foremost concern of Assam’s people was “Miya-related issues,” adding that those who supported such groups did not represent the sentiment of the Assamese public. He claimed that some were now using Zubeen Garg’s legacy to obstruct eviction drives, despite having shown little regard for the singer during his lifetime. He asserted that his government had always given the late artist the respect he deserved.

The Chief Minister alleged that the sympathy expressed by some groups following Zubeen Garg’s death was driven by an intention to “save Miya people from eviction” rather than genuine affection. He further stated that Zubeen Garg’s true supporters were the Assamese people, questioning why photographs of the singer were absent in gatherings of the community he criticised.

He pointed to the forthcoming “Istama” in Gauripur on 21 December, challenging organisers to display Zubeen Garg’s photograph if their claims of admiration were sincere.

His remarks come at a time when political discourse around encroachment drives and Zubeen Garg’s legacy continues to intensify, adding another dimension to the broader debate ahead of key public and political events in the state.
