CM Sarma Inaugurates Dinesh Goswami Flyover at Bharalumukh to Ease Guwahati Traffic

Guwahati, March 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated the Dinesh Goswami Flyover at Bharalumukh, marking a significant addition to the state government’s ongoing push to upgrade urban infrastructure in Guwahati.

Speaking at the event, Sarma said the new flyover would offer long-awaited relief to residents who had for years struggled with traffic congestion caused by the railway crossing in the area. He noted that with the opening of the elevated corridor, commuters would no longer face the repeated delays that had become routine at the busy junction.

The 1.2-kilometre structure, built at an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore, links Bharalumukh and Shantipur, two key nodes in the city’s transport network. The project had earlier been scheduled for completion by March 10, but work was finished ahead of time. During a site inspection last month, the Chief Minister had indicated that the project was nearing completion, underscoring the government’s focus on expediting major infrastructure works.

With the commissioning of the flyover, Railway Gate No. 9 has been permanently shut, eliminating disruptions caused by passing trains. The elevated route is expected to substantially reduce congestion at the Bharalumukh junction and improve travel time for those commuting across the western parts of the city.

Announcing the naming of the structure, Sarma said the flyover has been dedicated to former Union Law Minister Dinesh Goswami as a tribute to his contributions to Assam and national politics. Goswami, a senior figure of the Asom Gana Parishad, was credited by the Chief Minister for helping secure an increase in Assam’s share of central grants from a 70:30 to a 90:10 ratio, a funding formula that continues to support the state’s development initiatives.

Recalling the late leader’s impact, Sarma said Goswami played a key role in shaping Assam’s political and financial direction, adding that the government was proud to honour his legacy in this manner. The inauguration of the flyover forms part of a broader series of projects aimed at modernising Guwahati’s urban landscape and strengthening its transport infrastructure.
