CM Sarma Reviews Final Preparations for Swahid Smarak Khetra Inauguration

Guwahati: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday visited the Swahid Smarak Khetra at Boragaon to review the final preparations for its grand inauguration on December 10, observed as Swahid Divas. The iconic memorial, built on over 98 bigha of land, honours the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

The Swahid Smarak Khetra, whose foundation stone was laid in 2019, features water bodies, an auditorium, a prayer hall, a cycle track and a sound-and-light show depicting key moments from the Assam Movement and the state’s history.

During the inspection, Dr. Sarma reviewed various components of the project and assessed the finishing works underway. Accompanied by senior officials, he issued directions to ensure all tasks are completed on time.

The Chief Minister also suggested enhancements to the structural, aesthetic and commemorative elements of the memorial. He emphasised that the site should serve as a lasting tribute to the martyrs and inspire future generations to reflect on their sacrifices.

The Martyrs’ Column will be formally inaugurated on December 10, Swahid Divas. Senior officials including Cultural Affairs Additional Chief Secretary B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, Principal Secretary (Implementation of Assam Accord) G.D. Tripathi, and Special Commissioner & Secretary (PWD) Raj Chakraborty were present during the visit.
