Congress–AJP Pact Reshapes Barhampur Contest as Rajen Gohain’s Name Surfaces

The political contest in Barhampur constituency of Nagaon district gathered fresh momentum after the Congress and the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) reached a seat-sharing understanding ahead of the polls.

As part of the arrangement, the Congress left the 59 No. Barhampur Assembly constituency to the AJP, signalling a strategic realignment between regional and national forces in the run-up to the elections. The development has triggered renewed political calculations on the ground.

Adding intrigue to the evolving scenario is speculation that former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Rajen Gohain may be fielded by the AJP from Barhampur. Although no formal announcement has been made, political circles remain abuzz with discussions over the possibility of Gohain entering the fray under the AJP banner.

Responding to the development for the first time, sitting Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami said he would welcome the contest if it materialises.

Extending his best wishes to Gohain, Goswami described him as his political mentor and said it would be his first election contest against his “guru”. He added that if given the opportunity to face him in the electoral arena, it would be a valuable and memorable experience.
