Congress Faces Setback in Dhubri as Abul Mia Joins Raijor Dal Ahead of Assam Polls

Guwahati, March 17: In a significant political development ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam, the Indian National Congress has suffered a setback in western Assam with senior leader Abul Mia resigning from the party and joining the Raijor Dal.

Mia’s exit, linked to internal dissatisfaction following the delimitation exercise, has exposed growing fissures within the Congress’s state unit. The development is being viewed as a significant blow in Dhubri district, particularly as the newly expanded Gauripur constituency is emerging as a key electoral battleground.

A former General Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and Vice President of the Dhubri District Congress, Mia reportedly resigned over dissatisfaction with the party’s candidate selection. The Congress has nominated sitting Golakganj MLA Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar from the Gauripur seat.

Sources indicated that the resignation stemmed from perceived neglect and internal disagreements over ticket distribution, which have intensified after the recent reshaping of constituencies. Political observers believe Mia’s move could alter local electoral dynamics, given his grassroots influence in the region.

The development is expected to impact the Congress’s traditional support base in Gauripur, a constituency that now spans 33 panchayats and has expanded significantly in terms of geography and voter base, making electoral management more complex.

Mia’s induction into Raijor Dal is likely to strengthen the regional party’s position in lower Assam and could lead to a multi-cornered contest in the constituency, posing challenges for both the Congress and other major political players in the district.
