Congress Leadership Reviews Assam Assembly Poll Strategy and Voter Roll Revision in Key Delhi Meet

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi hosted a crucial meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday with senior leaders from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) to strategize for the state’s upcoming assembly elections and review the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls. The deliberations, which included Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal, Assam PCC chief Gaurav Gogoi, AICC in-charge Jitendra Singh, and Congress Legislative Party leader Debabrata Saikia, focused on comprehensive election readiness, detailed voter roll procedures, and other pertinent state matters.

The high-level session comes as the party steps up preparations for the Assam assembly elections, which are anticipated to be held in March or April of next year. Party sources confirmed that a thorough review of election planning and the critical management of electoral rolls was undertaken. The process of Special Revision for voter lists is currently underway across Assam, reflecting the party’s concerted effort to ensure adherence to Election Commission guidelines and complete voter inclusion. Internal organisational synchronization with the broader requirements set by the Election Commission of India, particularly concerning the preparation and accuracy of the state’s voter lists, was highlighted as a key priority.

In a significant update for the electoral process, the Election Commission has instructed Assam’s chief electoral officer that 1 January 2026 will be the qualifying date for the Special Revision of electoral rolls. This date is foundational for determining voter eligibility and ensuring the integrity of the forthcoming electoral exercise. Officials involved in the revision process have clarified that the SR is positioned between the routine annual Special Summary Revision and the more extensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, aiming for a streamlined yet thorough update ahead of the polls. Notably, the Election Commission had previously directed a Special Intensive Revision in 12 states and Union territories, including four that are also slated for elections in the coming year. The combined preparatory efforts by both political parties and election authorities in Assam are geared towards facilitating a transparent and efficient polling process in 2026.
