Conrad K Sangma announces scholarships for over one lakh students on MDA anniversary

SHILLONG, Feb 26: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday announced that more than one lakh students will receive scholarships on March 6 to mark the eighth anniversary of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.

Making the announcement during the ongoing budget discussions in the Assembly, Sangma described the completion of eight years in office as a proud milestone for the government. He said the scholarships would be disbursed under the Chief Minister’s special initiative aimed at supporting students across the state.

“On March 6, the MDA government will complete eight years in office. To commemorate this milestone, we will release the Chief Minister’s scholarship to over one lakh students,” he said.

The Chief Minister also underscored the government’s efforts to improve academic outcomes, particularly in rural and remote areas. He highlighted the introduction of guidebooks to assist students preparing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations, noting that many learners lack access to adequate study materials and guidance.

He observed that failure in Class 10 examinations often discouraged students at a crucial stage in their lives and stressed the government’s responsibility to ensure they received the necessary academic support to move forward. The guidebooks, he said, aimed to help students struggling with examinations and reduce dropouts after matriculation.

Sangma congratulated the education department for preparing the materials and termed the initiative an important step towards strengthening school education in the state. He added that similar academic support mechanisms were available under other education boards in the country and affirmed the government’s commitment to providing comparable assistance to Meghalaya’s students.

The scholarship programme, he said, would offer both financial aid and encouragement, enabling students to continue their studies and pursue their academic aspirations.
