Shillong, March 20: Conrad K Sangma has praised young footballer Sanfida Nongrum, calling her a “true pride of our state” following her landmark performance at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
Nongrum, 20, came into the spotlight after scoring India’s first goal at the tournament in 23 years, drawing widespread national attention. She has also become the first woman from Meghalaya to represent the country at the senior level, marking a significant milestone for the state in women’s football.
In a social media post on March 20, Sangma described meeting the player as a proud moment and termed her achievement “nothing short of remarkable.” He also expressed support for her future journey, wishing her continued success on both national and international stages.
The Chief Minister had earlier announced a financial grant of Rs 2 lakh in recognition of her achievement, aimed at supporting her continued development in the sport. Nongrum’s rise from the domestic circuit to the international arena is being seen as a major boost for women’s football in the state, inspiring a new generation of players.
