Sivasagar: A major controversy has erupted in Nazira after a contractor allegedly siphoned off funds meant for the construction of an embankment road and erosion-control measures along the Dikhow river. Despite receiving nearly 90% of the sanctioned amount — ₹3,83,34,046 — the contractor has failed to complete the work.
The project, sanctioned in May 2022 with a two-year completion deadline, has seen repeated delays and poor execution. Even after the contract was extended by three months in July 2024, the embankment remains far from completion.
The Tai Ahom Youva Parishad, Assam (TAIPA) has strongly condemned the alleged misappropriation, accusing the contractor and officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) of collusion and corruption. The organisation claimed that the project funds were systematically embezzled under the guise of time extensions and partial work.

Locals and heritage activists are particularly alarmed as the incomplete embankment has left the historic Garkhiya Dol, a culturally significant monument, vulnerable to severe erosion from the Dikhow river.
TAIPA has demanded an immediate investigation into the scandal, strict action against the contractor and complicit officials, and the blacklisting of the contractor from future government projects. Residents fear that unless swift measures are taken, both public money and invaluable heritage will continue to be at risk.
