Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Sees Strong Growth in FY 2025–26

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has reported a significant rise in passenger traffic and revenue for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) during the financial year 2025–26, underlining the enduring appeal of the iconic hill railway. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway continues to draw tourists and railway enthusiasts from across the globe with its scenic routes, historic charm, and unique travel experience. In FY 2025–26, passenger footfall reached 2.15 lakh, while earnings crossed ₹25 crore. This marks an increase of approximately 17.72% in passenger traffic and 14.71% in revenue compared to the previous financial year.

Officials attributed the growth to a multi-pronged strategy focused on improving passenger experience while preserving the railway’s heritage value. Initiatives such as curated tourism packages, enhanced onboard services, improved infrastructure, and stronger stakeholder engagement have played a key role in boosting its popularity. The rising demand for the famed “Heritage Train” has also contributed significantly to the local economy, generating employment opportunities and supporting tourism-driven growth in the Darjeeling hills.

NFR stated that the latest performance reaffirms DHR’s status as one of India’s most treasured railway legacies and a symbol of engineering excellence. The railway zone reiterated its commitment to preserving and promoting the historic line for future generations while continuing to enhance visitor experience. With sustained demand and strategic improvements, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway remains a cornerstone of heritage tourism in India.
