Nagaon: In a surprise move, Nagaon District Commissioner, Debashish Sarma, along with the Food Safety Officer, Fisheries Officer, and a mobile laboratory team, inspected the fish market at Morikolong and vegetable market at Barbazar in Nagaon town today.
During the inspection, the Commissioner collected samples of fish from the market to test for the presence of formalin. The inspection team also visited the paikari vegetable market and collected samples of vegetables to check for pesticide residues.
The Commissioner then inspected a sweet factory owned by Biju Ghosh at Morikolong and found that the sweets were being prepared in unhygienic conditions. The factory was immediately sealed by the authorities.
The inspection team also visited PNB Sweet Shop at Dhing Gate and found the drainage system to be unsatisfactory. The Commissioner directed the department to issue an improvement notice to the shop owner and warned that failure to comply would result in legal action.

The inspection was conducted in the presence of senior Food Safety Officer Munindra Bhuyan, Junior Food Safety Officer Sumu Saikia, and Fisheries Development Officer Liza Morang, among others. The inspection aimed to ensure food safety and quality in the town.
The Commissioner’s surprise inspection has sent a strong message to traders and shop owners to maintain high standards of hygiene and quality in their businesses, stated in an official release here.
